This special issue will provide an interdisciplinary exploration of the social, political, and artistic milieu of early twentieth-century Black Lisbon. It will give a contextualized account of the work, thought, anticolonial and antiracist legacies of a community of artists and intellectuals of African descent who contributed to shaping both Black Lisbon and more broadly Portuguese modernist culture. The articles in this issue will focus on: Black internationalism and anticolonialism; the Black press in early twentieth-century Lisbon; Race, antiracism, and modernism in Portugal; antiracism and white allyship; Black women and politics; microhistories of Black Portuguese citizens; Race, gender and sexuality in early twentieth-century Lisbon.
